Habiba
The artworks in the exhibition explore the theme of Al Beit (Home). I've chosen these pieces because they each contribute differently but symbiotically to a narrative that highlights The Blad, a place of personal nostalgia and memory. My aim for the curation of my work is to invite the viewer and hoping they partake in this feeling. I included a swing, as it transports the audience to a place of childhood and reminds one of innocence and peace of mind.
Works like Yasmine, with its delicate floral theme, and Damascene Courtyard, which captures the serene appeal of an inner traditional Damascus, home convey a sense of calm. These compositions express a desire for the serenity and peace that once defined The Blad. Waterings of Hope, adds another layer of symbolism. The act of watering, a ritual of nurturing life, signifies an enduring faith in the possibility of renewal. These serene works serve as a foundation for the exhibition. Pieces like Debris of Gold expose the observer to the grim realities of war. Shattered pieces and destroyed artwork. Like Syria, my artwork is diverse with different perspectives. The choice of materials plays a crucial role in conveying the complexities of The Blad.
The majority of the works are crafted from ceramics and plaster. Pottery is strongly related to my homeland as it is intertwined with the Syrian Culture. Pottery in Syria has always been both functional and artistic. Potters create vessels for everyday use, like storage jars for food and water, but these items are often decorated with beautiful designs and patterns, which reflects the Syrian appreciation for craftsmanship and aesthetics. I am purposely interested in showing broken artworks as it reminds me of my home.
For my exhibition installation, I incorporated things that are related to my home as a background or setting for my artworks, as if bringing it back alive from London. Familiar items that triggers memories serve as settings for my artworks. I was greatly inspired by Mohamad Hafez works for my installation of Damascene Courtyard of showing destroyed objects relating to Syria.
