My primary reason for choosing these artworks was the link of inspiration across them, with most being inspired off of a game I have a big connection with. The game itself has a strong connection to human nature and spirit. I have tried exploring concepts such as the fear of predators and being watched in a few of my artworks, as well as the fascination with calamity and the end of the world. However the primary theme of my pieces are the link they have with human nature and how our many attributes make
us unique.
I tended to explore the idea of human concepts or fears, as well as generally unique aspects that make us as people different to other animals. For two of my pieces I covered the human spirit and how our persistence and endurance set us apart from other species and make us uniquely strong. For both pieces the hunter/human is depicted as significantly smaller to visually express the difference in strength. And yet the hunters both have their weapons drawn and prepared. I aimed to highlight that despite unwinnable odds we can still prevail in the face of certain failure due to us never giving no matter how many times we falter. For my pieces on the legendary black dragon Fatalis from Monster Hunter, I tried covering humanities fascination with depicting world ending event. Both pieces use dark tones with greys, blacks, and dark maroons. The dragon represents chaos and destruction and wrath. To symbolise this, I use stronger colours like vibrant oranges and yellows, particularly for its fire. A few of my works are colourless due to me wanting to both explore a new technique where I only use grey scale, as well as making the subjects in my pieces clearer with more bold and visible outlines.
Most of the choices in exhibiting were tied with what I depicted in my work and what I wanted to express. An obvious example being my piece “Terrifyingly Majestic” which acts as a sort of centre piece to my exhibition with its size, due to the pieces focus on scale I decided to have it be the largest work I displayed. Another example would be having my piece “Walking Calamity” hang the highest out of all of my pieces. I made this choice as I felt it matched the grandiosity and scale of the dragons legend, with it being a monster of unimaginable might, it looks down on the viewers metaphorically and physically.
