Perspective allows us to see the world from different angles, where one person may see something from one view, another person may see it from a different perspective, which makes each person have a different understanding of the thing they see. This exhibition is an exploration on the way we see things and the unique angles of the world that can alter the way we see different things. Whether it be the direct perspective we look down upon a building from, or a more abstract use of perspective such as the way we view fantasy versus reality, perspective is the main tie between all my works in this exhibition.
Beyond the element of perspective, these works are each an exploration into an idea that intrigues me, or an element of the world I enjoy. Whether it be the natural beauty of the ocean, the extreme and grander scale of modern rollercoasters, or the way different seasons make environments look different. I have grown to love these aspects of the world through the different experiences I have had in my life and this exhibition is in a way a reflection of that. They are what makes it a more interesting place to live in for me and others who enjoy the same aspects I have chosen to present.
With most of my works I have tried to make an exploration into a different style of artwork, with a blend of flat and sculptural works. Each work shows the result of a set of technical skills that I have developed over the course of the IB visual arts course. These range from the basic use of acrylic painting, to experimenting with lino cut printing, using the pottery wheel, working with two-point perspective, and creating models out of wire. The techniques used in my works are a reflection of what I am trying to show with the work, for example the use of perspective in Stealth Poser to enhance the sense of scale in the ride, or the brushstrokes used in Edge of the Reef to show the texture of light as it meets the ocean.
When looking at how the exhibition comes together as a whole, I designed it to connect put the artworks that connected with each other together, with the works slowly transitioning from one to the other, creating a flow throughout the exhibition. So, whilst some of my works are verry different from each other they are all connected to each other. The way they are connected like this is to show the ways perspective can be used in different ways, and whilst some of the works do not have a clear connection with the idea of perspective, but each work has a take on the way we see things.
Ultimately, whilst my works are designed to relate to their own themes and ideas, I want this exhibition to be an exploration of my works. I hope that you can be able to explore my exhibition and discover your own meaning for each work yourself, beyond the themes and ideas I present. My art was created as an exploration for myself, and through exhibiting it I want you to be able to do the same with my artworks.
